Please, the heat is too much...

...the heat rising from the candles on my cake, that is. (You just THOUGHT I was going to bitch about the summers in Texas again, didn't you?)

Today is my 36th birthday. Birthday's don't usually get to me, but I'm in a bit of a funk today. I think it's just general exhaustion, but who knows. I'm realizing that I'm now definitely in my mid-30s, and there's no turning back. So, here's 36 things I can say about being 36.

1. You're old enough to not give a shit about what people think about you near as much.

2. Doing things like drinking a couple sangria margaritas followed by a wine cooler can leave you feeling like you are more like 56 the next day.

3. You're old enough to really appreciate and value those friends in your life who have been around and there for you for awhile...no matter where they live or how different their lives are from your own.

4. You get better at self-reflection--it happens sooner and there's less looking back with regret and more with understanding of where things have taken you.

5. Mid-30s bring health problems and you start really focusing on trying to get in the best shape you can. No more weekends of eating Mexican and huge breakfast without paying the price. Oh, wait...maybe I forgot that last weekend!

6. Celebrity gossip and stupidness (read Paris Hilton here) just seems so less interesting to you than it did only a few years before.

7. With that said, you definitely appreciate a good laugh at some rich celebrity parent's expense. (Thank you, Mamarazzi!)

8. You begin to realize that all of these annoy cliches are really true: time really does fly, it is a VERY small world, and the kindness you show to others does come back to you in tenfold at some point.

9. You hate laundry more than ever.

10. Finding a spiritual connection with a good friend is worth its weight in gold.

11. No one dances enough. (Mental note: dance more, Momcat.)

12. You grow more impatient with finding what your true passion and meaning is in this life and start actively trying to figure it out.

13. Good therapy is hard to come by and worth its weight in gold.

14. Music can heal the soul and connect two people forever.

15. Nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels. (OK, I don't know this one yet actually, but I'm hoping it is true and hoping I can figure that out one day soon!)

16. Not everyone can or should wear low-rise jeans.

17. Nothing makes your heart melt like your little girl holding your face in her hands and saying "I loff you, Mama."

18. You never know about those friendships that fall apart. Things can work themselves out over time and friendships can be rebuilt--for the better.

19. Those nail technicians never change with their speaking in another language while working on your toes. And, you will never be convinced that they are not joking about you either.

20. The world is not as funny of a place now that Dave Chappelle left his show.

21. Different circles of friends most definitely see you differently--one may wonder about what makes you tick while another may wish you'd stop sharing so much of yourself!

22. Watching your kids bond over a lazy summer break does your heart wonders.

21. No matter how different you are from your family and how much you've changed, nothing changes the fact that they are your family. That connection bridges the gaps in times of crises or need.

22. Politically incorrect humor is underrated. We all need to laugh at ourselves.

23. Writing 36 things is really kind of hard!

24. There is something a little off about you when you get a kick out of cleaning out someone else's closets for the weekend. You are certain the "closetee" wonders about you as well!

25. You wish just once that a nail technical would really just "shape" your nails instead of trimming them all off where you can feel the tips of your fingertips.

26. You realize that queasy feeling you get when you can actually feel the tips of your fingers is not a normal thing.

27. Your favorite two inventions of this century have to be the DVR and ITunes.

28. When pressed though, you realize that you really don't want to spend $400 to get an Ipod right now. Where IS that Ipod fairy when you need her?

29. Nothing feels better than crossing off things on your list of to-dos. (For those keeping track--I'm done with the invites, done with 1 quilt square done with 1 book and almost done with another and about to start the second quilt square! YAY!)

30. If someone actually reads all of these things and comments, you will be very surprised. (Note to MomCat: post over this boring list SOON!)

31. Your husband will tell you he likes that "La-la" song by Ashlee Simpson, when he hears it, until you tell him who really is singing it. Then, he will back-pedal like hell.

32. Heterosexual men do not like George Michael or songs that sound like George Michael, no matter how good the beat is.

33. Make sure you screen your Eminem downloads before playing them in the car with your kids. That is, unless you want your kids to know how to say "mother f-er" with real meaning.

34. No matter how hard you try, you can NOT hip-hop dance like your aerobics instructor. You are an awkward white woman, for goodness sake!

35. Life can change in the blink of an eye: a death, divorce, health crises, job change--all could mean your life would never be the same as it is now. So, enjoy it!

36. Turning 36 can mean whatever you want it to--so choose to make a difference this year in some way. Live with compassion, confidence, and humility. Find a way to love yourself more each day and share more of your gifts with others. Life is a beautiful thing!

Awesome list, really. You know, my grandma used to say that youth is wasted on the young. It took me until age 35 to get what she meant. Smart cookie, that woman.

;-)

Happy Birthday!!
