Celebrity--it ain't all roses, I guess...

I don't know about you all, but I was sort of sad to hear the rumor about Owen Wilson attempting suicide this week. I don't know if it will turn out that it is true, or just tabloid speculation, but I was surprised by it. I'm kind of fond of those Wilson boys in general--Dallas raised boys. They always seem so down-to-earth in interviews so that it feels like you're watching someone you could have gone to high school with or something.

Well, I decided to go to IMDB to check out what they had on Owen and I learned some interesting things, including:

- He's an excellent skateboarder.
- He was expelled from a private school in Dallas in the 10th grade.
- He later attended U.T. but quit just 2 classes short of a degree.

And, most interesting, that I'm sure all of my movie-buff/screen-play writing friends in Austin will already know, but Wilson actually first got attention for a screen-play he co-wrote, getting $5 million to make it a movie by James L. Brooks. That's when he moved to Cali with his brothers and soon after fell into acting. But, Wilson actually still considers himself more of a writer, than an actor, according to the site. Here's just a few quotes from it:

"I can't think of a movie I wish I'd acted in, but there are movies I wish I'd written."

"Sometimes I stop and think how strange this all is. Something that began as a little idea in Austin, that Wes and I just walked around talking about between ourselves, has turned into all this."

Kind of amazing to think that Wilson really was just a wandering writer who got lucky on one script and then ended up being a major film star. I guess I understand why I felt this home-boy kind of connection to him after all, he's not that different from a few of my pals living in A-Town still. Get well soon, O-man...

I feel the same way... He grew up near me, went to UT not long after I did (or maybe even at the same time), and he was actually nominated for an Academy Award for screenwriting. Since I got a TV/film degree, consider myself a writer, and grew up acting in the Dallas area, I've always thought he seemed like someone I might have known or hung out with. In fact, a friend of mine did meet Luke Wilson as part of a film project he was making in Austin. I was definitely shocked to hear this (possible) news today. There is some celebrity news, like the whole Anna Nicole thing, that is horrible but not that surprising, but when it's someone as successful and seemingly laid back and easygoing as Owen Wilson, it's pretty weird!

The news really shocked me too--I think because he's made such a name for himself playing these easy going, laid back surfer dude types. It gets hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to actors, I think. Anyway, I'm hoping he gets the help he needs to recover both physically and emotionally. Depression is just a horrible thing all around.
